Windrush Stories: Portraits & Voices
Windrush Stories: Portraits & Voices is an intergenerational heritage project that brings together primary school pupils from London and Luton with members of the Windrush Generation.
Over the past term, young people have spent time in conversation with elders, learning their stories of arrival, settling and building community in Britain. Through drama, photographs and creative storytelling, pupils have developed their own artistic responses to these powerful histories.
The result is a free public exhibition featuring striking portraits of Windrush elders photographed by Steve Bright, alongside children's interpretations of their stories through poetry and performance. Visitors can listen to children's creative responses and insights into the people behind the pictures, with audio descriptions available throughout.
The project is a collaboration between Arts Bridge Charity, Welbourne Primary School in Tottenham and Dallow Primary School in Luton. The exhibition ran at Jacksons Lane from 22 June to 20 July, then moved to Luton Central Library from 6 July to 30 July.
This is a celebration of intergenerational connection, cultural heritage and the voices of young people and elders alike.
