Root to Rise

Made possible thanks to funding from Arts Council England, Root to Rise was a participant-led, intergenerational, arts-based nature project. The project had two strands:

  • Renovation - Renovating the gardens and outdoor spaces of Protheroe House, a care home in Tottenham, London

  • Creation - Supporting the elders and local children to explore their creativity

Root to Rise saw children, elders, local artists & gardening professionals collaborate to regenerate the gardens of a residential care home into a vibrant creative hub. Local poets / spoken word artists and nature craft practitioners delivered workshops for the elders. The activities explored in these sessions were the stimulus for the local children to creatively respond to through dance, physical theatre, poetry and drama. Masterclass sessions supported the children in developing their creative skills, providing them with a toolkit of techniques they could apply within the devising process.

An informal sharing of work for an invited audience of friends and family took place in the gardens of the care home in August 2022. Root to Rise will continue at Protheroe House until December 2022.
